Heavyweights graced the 2nd Annual Don Mattera Lecture

The second Annual Don Mattera Lecture was a grand affair with heavyweights in the political arena, media and arts fraternity gracing the stage in honour of the fallen doyen of poetry Dr Donato, Francesco Mattera affectionately known as ‘Bra Don’ or ‘Bra Zinga’. The theme for the second lecture was, ‘The Child’, a continuation of the Inaugural lecture theme which is a cause Dr Don Mattera ferociously championed throughout his life in his quest to uphold the dignity and rights of all children.

The lecture was hosted by seasoned MC and award-winning journalist, broadcaster and author Iman Rappetti as the Master of Ceremonies, featured celebrated and award-winning writer, performer, producer, actress and activist, Lebo Mashile who is a South African household name, most recognizable for her lyrical and gutsy poetry which has captivated audiences in 32 countries worldwide.

Lebo’s performance was followed by the main attraction, former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe as the keynote speaker all this in honour of the late Don Mattera.  The Former President often described as refreshingly undogmatic; a lifelong student of history in the pursuit of a just, equitable and inclusive society described in detail the source and lack of ethical leadership in government. He lamented the constant political change which leads to instability when newly elected political leaders ascend to power.

Mothlanthe said, “It is my singular honour to have participated in the second annual Don Mattera Lecture where we had the opportunity to reflect on the many stories and the life and work od Don Mattera. This year theme ‘The Child’ invited us all to build upon Don’s compassionate approach and in so doing contribute in a world we all want to live in”.

“Creating a Compassionate Adult” leaning towards the UNICEF expression of focusing on the psycho-social health and wellbeing of ‘The Child’, so that every CHILD is ready to develop and learn was a key focus of the lecture.

The event was held on Saturday 27th May 2023 at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, Sandton from 15:00 – 18:00 in partnership with the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA).
